WordPress is one of the most misunderstood things in the world

Of all the misunderstood things in the world, WordPress must be one of the most.

It is misunderstood on so many levels that I feel I have to explain what it is all the time, even to fellow techies.

A lot of people seem to think WordPress is just for simple sites or blogs. I suppose that’s understandable because its theming side was how it initially got very popular. But it’s really much more than that now.

At its core, WordPress is a system for managing content in a database – usually MySQL, though others work too. It’s even possible to connect it to more than one database if needed. Plus, it has a really flexible REST API for sending data in and out and the block editor (Gutenberg) is hands down the best content editor in the world, now capable of creating all sorts of layouts and content. When you combine these things, you can use it as the foundation for pretty much any kind of website or web-based application.

Sometimes people get confused between WordPress.org and WordPress.com. They sound the same, but they’re different. WordPress.org is the open-source software itself, the code that anyone can download and install on their own web hosting to build whatever they want. That’s the one I use. WordPress.com is a specific company and service that uses the WordPress.org software to offer hosted websites. The fact that WordPress.com runs such a huge number of sites shows how capable the underlying .org software can be when it’s managed properly.

Because WordPress was relatively easy to get started with for a long time, lots of people learned to use it, which is great in many ways. But it also means there’s a huge range in the quality of WordPress sites out there. Some are built without much thought for structure or performance, and WordPress gets blamed for this, when in reality it’s not WordPress that’s the issue at all. If you’re building something you care about, it’s really important to work with someone who understands WordPress deeply – not just how to install a theme, but how it works internally, how to structure code properly for it, and how to make sure the final result is reliable and efficient. There’s a big difference between just using WordPress and building well with WordPress.
